Rising GEAR UP sophomores and juniors can race into summer learning with a 5-day camp on the campus of Appalachian State University June 17-21. Camp NASCAR (Navigating Automobile Safety Collisions and Robotics) aims to increase interest and engagement in robotics and computer science and allow students to learn more about the history of Nascar in North Carolina.
GEAR UP Academic Innovation Specialist, Brittany Brady says, “The Academic Innovation Team is looking forward to hosting a one-of-a-kind experience for rising 10th and 11th grade students in our cohort! Working with a facilitator from the ASU Robotics Team, students will work to code a vehicle to complete a racing circuit while integrating elements of NASCAR science and safety. We have some very unique opportunities that we are excited to share with the students in attendance!”
At the camp, students will stay and dine on campus, complete racing obstacle courses using coding machines, learn from App State Robotics team members and coaches, participate in an external field trip, and compete in a culminating competition in front of their families and friends. This event is free for GEAR UP students, and registration opens March 1. Interested students should talk to their GEAR UP Coordinators for more information.
